The most recent fire was a home owned by an
elderly woman. Her health issues required five oxygen tanks in the home.
The fire hydrants in the community had just been painted red the previous
month and gave the appearance of being maintained. When firefighters
arrived, the hydrants had no water to battle a blaze in a community with more
than 900 families. The oxygen tanks in the resident’s home exploded from the
heat of the fire and homes surrounding hers melted. Residents of this
community have picketed, attended meetings and brought this issue to their
local and state officials in order to correct this situation. Their efforts
led to the establishment of a State committee under the Illinois Department
of Public Health to address these safety issues. A MHOAI representative will
be a member of this committee so that your issues will be addressed. Along
with residents, State Senator Christine Radogno and MHOAI will continue
addressing these and other issues that will not only help Rosebud residents,
but residents state-wide.
Rosebud community located in Bridgeview has been
the subject of many newspaper articles and controversy in Cook County.
Elected officials, residents and others are often shocked to learn the State
of Illinois does not legally require fire hydrants in our communities that
were established prior to 1997.
