Water Meter Regulation

More and more of our communities are receiving water meters in their communities. Along with this change we are hearing from many home owners that their water bills are not itemized. They are either verbally told the cost, or just receiving a total cost. You can and should request itemized bills if you are not receiving one now.

We have received calls from home owners who said they questioned their manager about the bills. These residents report the manager has replied with a different total amount due.

Other residents were given verbal quotes of $60 to over $100 a month. Many of these residents paid these verbal estimates, saying they were afraid they would be told to move.

MHOAI is also learning of home owners who are told they must pay for the costs of repairs when underground pipes break. The landlord is responsible for the underground pipes. If you have concerns contact the Illinois Department of Public Health and/or MHOAI.
