In Short, if passed you would be paying 400% more in this tax. Those living outside of Cook County pay a tax to the general fund of their county that only mobile/manufactured homeowners pay known as local service tax, privilege tax, or real estate tax, depending on the county you live in. MHOAI has been telling homeowners that this type of legislation will continue to be introduced to our state legislators every year, and will only be stopped by homeowners doing their part to stop this type of legislation.
Today you pay :
- 1st and 2nd year of home 15 cents per square foot
- 3rd - 5th year, 13.5 cents per square foot
- 6th - 8th year, 12 cents per square foot
- 9th - 11th year, 10.5 cents per square foot
- 15th and older, 7.5 cents per square foot
If this law was passed it would be:
- 1st-3rd year of home 60 cents per square foot
- 4th - 7th year, 50 cents per square foot
- 8th - 11th year, 45 cents per square foot
- 12th - 15th year, 40 cents per square foot
- 16th - 19th year, 35 cents per square foot
- 20th and older, 30 cents per square foot
In other words, what you are paying in taxes would be tripled and more, for years in the future. Senator Clayborn claims many homeowners pay in the area of $200,000 for our homes, and if we can afford these costs, than we can afford the taxes. Advocates of this bill say it does not matter that most of our homeowners are elderly, because they have the money and do not pay their fair share of taxes if living in a mobile/manufactured home.
MHOAI continues to tell your elected officials that these assumptions are not true. We must all focus on stopping this legislation - not again this year, but in the future also. As many know, MHOAI has stopped this type of in the past, with help of membership making calls to committees and elected officials in their area. With your continued help and support, we can keep giving legislators correct information.
Next time someone asks, "What has MHOAI done lately?," you can remind them that together, we saved homeowners up to $1,000 a year in future tax money, once again. This type of legislation will come up again in the future.
Note: Those living in Cook County, pay attention, we have been able to stop this from coming to your door the last few years, but this same legislation is being taken to your county commissioners again this year.
