Volume 1, No. 4 - 05/09/2008
On April 10th, SB2434 passed in the Senate and is now in committee in the House. Please take the time to thank your Senator and urge your Representative to pass the bill when it comes before the House.
MHOAI can work toward getting needed laws passed. Unless the homeowners are aware of laws that are not being practiced by the owner operator of the community (landlord) they can go unseen and unreported to the correct agency. In March of 2002 MHOAI worked with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) allowing Illinois to join 36 other states in an effort to provide greater assistance for manufactured homeowners. Illinois became a state with a Service Administrative Agent (SAA) via the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). As an SAA the IDPH is responsible for investigating complaints related to the construction and installation of homes. The IDPH is required to work with the homeowner, dealer, manufacturer and installer to resolve problems. The SAA can still help homeowners past the duration of the warranty. If you have issues that are not being taken care of regarding the construction or installation of your home, you need to contact the IDPH and/or MHOAI. more...
In October of 2004 SB 2791 was signed into law becoming Public Act 93-1043. This law provides homeowners and new buyers with a disclosure in writing. History has proven this information is needed by present homeowners and first time buyers. This will aid future homeowners with clearer decision making when deciding what community to move into. more...
In December of 2000 former President Bill Clinton signed into law the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act. With this act came a 21 member consensus committee. The committee is divided into three categories: manufacturers and retailers, consumers and general interest and public officials. This committee provides the Secretary of HUD with recommendations for revisions and interpretations of the standards and procedural enforcement regulations. Terry Nelson was appointed to the committee about 3 years ago to represent consumers, which allows Illinois homeowners/consumers a front row seat. Nelson was also active in the passing of this federal legislation in 2000. more...
Did you ever wonder how MHOAI directors keep track of bills, laws and court cases involving other states? One way is through the networking of the national organization, Manufactured Home Owners Association of America (MHOAA). There are about 23 states which have a state organization such as MHOAI. Communication between MHOAI and other state organizations continue thoughout the year and there is an annual MHOAA convention. Illinois hosted the national convention in 2000. more
